Bright or Light?

a neutral shell with sage green and touches of red .....
I'm wondering if the display on the wall looks better against the neutral wall or
on the vibrant pinky red wall below .....
vibrant walls with neutral furniture .....
I think the both schemes are great and the displays look great either way -
Note however that on the neutral wall the art used is vibrant and on the vibrant wall the art (display) is black and white .....

Kitchen with a Difference: a blend of styles

Now here's a kitchen with a difference!!! As most of you would have gathered by now, the current trend in interiors/ decor, is to marry what you've got (the old) with the modern, newer acquisitions. This can make for a pleasant effect, provided it's pulled together by a common thread, whether shapes, colours, textures, materials, etc.

To me this kitchen is a great example of "marrying" different styles, and it works, so let's dissect why ....
  1. this is evidently a large space, probably a loft style or barn style home, judging by the space and the rafters. To complement this the space, which has been well utilised, the items are generally large and/ or dramatic, but yet the room is not cluttered i.e. it still remains airy.
  2. the shell (walls/ floors/ ceiling) is sleek and clean.
  3. the materials used are mostly natural (granite/ stone, wood, slate, steel e.g. the counter top is apparently granite, the shelves on the wall are wooden and have been left "floating", further creating a clean, uncluttered look and feel.
  4. the kitchen cupboards are a harmonious blend between the two styles,
  5. and the floor slate would look good in any scheme anyway, so fits in rather well.
  6. now to the finishes: the table is vintage/ traditional in style and is complemented by modern stools which appear to be made of a steel base and topped with solid wood
  7. the remainder of the items in this kitchen are mostly vintage, for example the light fittings, containers and urns .....
  8. and of course the art is "earthy" and although not what you would find in a kitchen area normally, the colours and organic shapes, certainly go a long way to pulling the whole look and feel together.

So there you have it, an example on how one can successfully marry old and new and make a statement to boot!

Simple Art 1.

Most people are wanting to make their homes look pretty, make changes, have fun, but not have to spend too much money, we are all, in some way, feeling the pinch. So today a few ideas on how to create some fun "art pieces and/ or displays" without too much hassle, time, or money.... take a look....
1. Use wonderful fabric print (as above), or even pieces of wonderfully patterned wallpaper and have it it inexpensively framed, or even glued to cheap canvases which you can purchase from art supply stores. For greater impact create a lovely threesome or a group!
2. Buy a whole lot of inexpensive frames (in which to place your postcards or art, etc.) and group them together - remember they must be similar in look, either all dark wood, or silver etc.
Another way I enjoy "playing" around with frames, is to hang up empty frames (just the frame, no backing), you can also place smaller ones within larger ones - creates a very impactful display.
3. Take a number of of mirrors or have a number of small/ medium mirrors framed (again create uniformity with the frames. Group them together on a wall - this one is fantastic in that you create different images by virtue of the reflections, it also introduces additional light!
4. And of course don't forget - if you take photos have a collection of your own pics printed and framed (see top pic for inspiration)!
And as always, look through your storerooms, cupboards etc. and see what you have available that can be re-used before dashing out the door to buy new things .....
