I know for a great number of you, you are in the throes of summer (lucky you!!! ♥♥♥), but hey someone has to be in winter at that time, so it's our turn in the southern hemisphere.... Winter to me is about a different kinda sumptuousness, about layers, thick textured fabrics, monchrome tones with the added texture or splash of colour to liven things up. These are from a feature on Homelife - don't you just love the woooly textures, layering and simplicity of this bedroom?!?!

I'm wondering if the display on the wall looks better against the neutral wall or

on the vibrant pinky red wall below .....

vibrant walls with neutral furniture .....

I think the both schemes are great and the displays look great either way -

Note however that on the neutral wall the art used is vibrant and on the vibrant wall the art (display) is black and white .....

A Kitchen Courtyard - with a difference .....

these are images that I took whilst at an open garden in Johannesburg.

I came round the corner only to be greeted by this fantastic kitchen courtyard with a definite french or european flair ....

gravel, french styled table and chairs, a bicycle, and of course wonderful pots...

some with herbs, others with plants .....

and since this spot is right outside the (gorgeous!!!!) kitchen, personally, I would certainly utilise the pots for herbs and small vegetables ....

Union Jack for tablecloths, upholstery, scatters cushions etc. -

introducing a shot of vibrant primary colour as well as

strong geometric lines

I love that it brings fun and humor and I suppose a talking point into a room.

I've always adored a "clean", white or neutral space, where one can bring to the fore textures and pattern to create a really interesting and inspiring living space. These examples are what I'm talking about. The upholstery, the throw the dark wood african drum table, texture on the floors and walls ....

whiteashed wooden floors, interesting mats, rugs and other items to create a welcoming entrance ....

books and more interesting objects, dark wooden stools .... all working together to make a really lovely home.

In fact, I'm finding that the more I explore white or neutral spaces, the more my love of them evolves and the more I want to create spaces like that for me too!!

Ring the changes with Neutral accents

The above two images show rooms decorated in predominantly white or off white shades - which in itself is really pristine, clean, calm, serene, etc.etc. but for some and to ring the changes, a dash of colour or other accents with great texture really bring the rooms alive.

Examples of this are demonstrated here with the use of mostly neutral accents - such as the blind , the art on the wall, the brown/ white throw in the bedroom and in the second image - the rustic bench a glimpse of a wicker armchair the stainless steel chair - they all add interest and depth to the room.

Red is an amazing colour - you either love it or hate it! It's very dramatic and can overpower.

However, somehow a room just seems to come alive with touches of red, whether big, as in a wall colour or small as in scatter cushions.

Now here's something that's simple and easy to do and very effective!

This idea could be done with any hardskinned fruit (apples, lemons etc.) and a complementary bunch of flowers - perfect for a lunch table!

Just remember to change the water every day to two days, wash the fruit and clip the bottom of the flowers stems before replacing - it sure is worth the effort, wouldn't you say?
